I work in pencil first to lay down the sketch and overlay in dipping ink and/or Staedtler pigment liners to get the overall feeling of what the art will look like. I then decide whether watercolours/computer rendering will be best, or sometimes it is a case of mixed media that comes into play. More often than not it is whatever makes the artwork finally, hopefully, 'POP!'

The two illustrations above were done in pencil first, inked up then coloured using
watercolour paints, watercolour pencils and watercolour inks using rough, 300gsm watercolour paper.
I kind of like the results, since I have never used rough watercolour paper before.

Part 1 of a story Christmas card illustration. "It's Nerry Christmas."

The above illustration was for a boy called Theo. Each character is trying to be noticed by the boy and each character has something to say.

A story greeting card…

… so please click this link Blog for the full chain of events behind these two illustrations.

This illustration was for a short story about a newly emerged dragonfly who didn’t understand that the bright evening yellow, flooding the forest floor, wasn't the end of the world.

Part of the 'Left Nut' drawing series.
A little snail humour…
(PS: and who knew snails had
phones!)

Two guys were talking about how wet their phones got which rendered them useless, so I remedied a ridiculous solution.
Telling a story in an invitation.

Another Left Nut 101 Scenario: When you leave a nut it becomes a 'left nut' hence the need to draw 'left nut' cartoons for my nut-loving friends.

An illustrated short story about a frightened and worried little mouse.
A birthday celebration…

K9 painting 'En Plein Air.'

An original Insecteatsy in the undergrowth.

'Don't anybody move!'
So, I promise, while you are looking, they won't.

This illustration was for a children's story about an old and haunted mountaintop cabin.

A little bird explaining advertising facts.

Some artworks come from a warming situation…
(Click this link Blog for the story)

…and some drawings come from nowhere.

I love to do story greeting cards…

…and this one was a particularly lovely one to do.

This illustration went from a rough thumbnail sketch to a rough dip pen drawing,
which I liked so much, I had to colour it up.
But then a little rabbit came along and sat in my drawing.
